Art Deco Style

From its beginnings Art Deco drew upon the exotic as a means of expression. Costumes, birds, and animals were used as both form and decorative motif. Lacquered finishes, wood grain, glassware, glossy surfaces and vibrant colour are all typical of the Art Deco era and can be seen throughout the Cottages.

Progressive designers, inspired by the avant-garde, turned to the abstract and geometric for both form and decoration. Modern designers adopted an increasingly simplistic style better suited to mass production and the emerging interest in the machine age.
